Description

In an article in the Canberra Times on 22 April 2017, University of Canberra scientist, Professor Janine Deakin ranked communication skills as the number one ‘soft skill’ needed by researchers and academics because it can ensure your work gets heard.

Media – like newspapers, TV, radio and online – can help you communicate with the public. The media can bring your work into the loungerooms of potential customers, supporters and beneficiaries. It can also bring you to the attention of investors and collaborators.

Seeking out media attention can be daunting, with many people hesitant to do media interviews due to lack of experience. Yet performing well in an interview can help control how your research is disseminated and discussed.

This series of workshops will give you tools to excel at media interviews. Learn techniques to effectively share complex issues with the public in way that is clear, exciting and memorable.

Your training with experienced communications consultant and journalist, Kristen Connell will culminate in a recorded radio interview.

Part 1 (6 March)

Participants in this workshop will receive training in:
• Understanding the media;
• Planning for a media interview, including preparing effective key messages;
• Performing in a media interview, including intensive interview practice; and
• Managing controversial issues and close media scrutiny.

Part 2 (date to be confirmed)

Participants will gain many new skills from this workshop, with the main outcomes being:
• Techniques for preparing for media interviews;
• More confidence in dealing with the media in all circumstances;
• Understanding how to take control of an interview.

Who is this workshop series for?
